I have heard the words HTML & CSS before but what are they? How do they affect my website?
What is HTML?
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. In short, HTML is a programming language that Web Developers & Web Designers use to build functional websites. You can simply think of HTML as a painter’s canvas or even multiple canvases. The Web Developer & Web Designer uses HTML to lay out the order of how information will be presented on the screen and isn’t worried about colors or even positioning of where the text will show up (this is where CSS comes into play). What is CSS?
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. To not get too technical, CSS is another programming language that Web Developers & Web Designers use to give style to the HTML “markup/structure.” Color, Font-Style (italic, normal), Font-Weight (bold, semi-bold, light, normal), positioning and even responsiveness are some of the things you can do with CSS. You can easily think of CSS as the painters instruments and supplies). Now that the information is available to the web browser via HTML the Web Developers & Web Designers use CSS to make everything visually appealing. Learn more about CSS by clicking here »
Does HTML and CSS need updating?
This can be debatable but in short… yes.
HTML has recently released HTML5 which incorporates some new tags that help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. read your website with ease and know exactly what content is related to what on your website. There are also some awesome things you can do with Video and Audio now, thanks to HTML5.
CSS has also received some updates to what is called CSS3 which adds animation affects and even short-hand markup to make code cleaner and more user friendly when it comes to reading, debugging, and understanding.
