Is a custom website out of your budget?

“It’s about how you use your budget, not how many zeros are at the end of it that counts.” – WP Elevation

Speaking as a small business, the team at Thrive knows a thing or two about budgeting. If we have learned anything about the value of a dollar, it’s that budgets boil down to your priorities. Your small business may not have 10K to spend on a new custom website, but that is okay. When it comes to budgets, it’s all about how you work it.

The next time you are looking to make a big purchase for your business, here are a few things to think about and a perspective you may not have considered before.

1) Keep it real

We live in the age of Pinterest, which means there is a DIY tutorial for virtually everything from rebuilding your engine to coding websites at home. When it comes to building a website, do you realistically have the skill set to do the whole job yourself?

While we agree that learning new skills is totally awesome (most of our team found their passion for design and development at home first!), it is important to take a good hard look at how taking on a complicated job by yourself may affect your bottom line. Do you have the time and financial resources to devote to doing the job right? If not, you will likely save some hard earned money in the long run by seeking a professional’s help first.  Plus we all know how trying something you see on Pinterest can sometimes work out!

2) Work what your momma gave ya

Although you might not be able to build your website from the ground up, there are a few things you can do as part of the website build process to save money for your business.

Some starting steps you can take are:

Once you have tackled these basic items, there are even more ways to save some money here and there. Can you provide your own high-quality images? If so, do a photoshoot specifically for each photo on your site. Do you feel confident in your ability to write SEO friendly web content? Then put a pen to paper (or, in the case of web content, put a cursor to screen) and get going!

Tasks like these would normally require a professional, and therefore a financial investment on your part. Talk to the web design company you are working with. They will be able to advise what tasks you can take in order to trim the budget for your web project. You might just be surprised at the ways you will be able to help and save money!

3) Think in terms of value, not in terms of dollars

Do you need an incredibly specific design? Are your project needs technically complex? Will your site be used to generate leads, ultimately affecting your bottom line?

Having a good handle on what your website project will entail will help you to be realistically prepared for the final cost. Once you have clear goals about what you need your website to achieve you will be able to work with your web designers to optimize your website’s function. Remember to see the big picture and think about the final product in terms of long term value, rather than the initial price of your investment.
